Mobile phones now feel like an extension of our arm and we get most of our information through social media. There are so many platforms and ways to get your message across, but where do you begin to build a presence? Instagram is rapidly become the go-to platform for modern brands, focusing more on the visual branding with copy playing the supporting role.
So how do you make the most of your Instagram profile, and make it work for you? As Julie Andrews recommends, 'Let's start at the very beginning, it's a very good place to start'.
Let's dive into some top tips to help you find your Insta groove...
➤ Think about target audience and what content they'd engage in. You don't need to appeal to every Instagram user - it's often better to find your specialism and own it.
➤ Write an impactful bio. It's the first thing people will read and it needs to sum up who you are, what you offer and what you want people to do. Make the most of the word count you get by using symbols, lists and the all important web link! Pick something that will get the results you want, like your 'shop' or 'sign up' page.
➤ Share your story. People are engaging more with stories than posts, so make sure to post a story most days if possible, even if it's sharing other people's relevant content or giving a shout out to someone. Share the love!
➤ Use the most relevant hashtags for your post and your goals. You can use hashtag generators online, or most social media schedulers have hashtag suggestions. Make sure these are either in the first comment or spaced way down the bottom of your post. No-one likes clutter! You can include up to 30 on a regular post and 10 on a story.
➤ Include a call to action - people will be more likely to engage with your content if you're asking a question or signposting them to something interesting.
➤ Have a plan for your content. This can start with the amount of times per week to post and at what time, who your audience is, and what types of post to share. There are loads of social media schedulers out there to help you make a strategic and beautiful plan. My fave is Later for the visual grid (not an ad!).
➤ Be confident in your tone of voice and brand identity. You don't have to make your feed look the same as others - people will follow you for your uniqueness. Be informative and focused on the solution you provide for your audience, but don't forget to add the human touch too.
➤ Show some face. Research has shown that photos of faces are more appealing to us humans, so share who you are, your clients and customers, or use stock imagery if you're stuck. Professional photos are great, but smartphones are pretty high quality these days, so get snapping!
➤ Add value. People follow accounts that tell them something new, make them feel something positive or that solve problems. If your content is bringing something to the table for your audience, they'll be loyal forever.
➤ Be consistent. The algorithm does not like inconsistency. Be realistic with your posting schedule - it's better to post twice a week, every week than bombard your audience one week with five posts and go silent the next.
➤ Above all, HAVE FUN! Social media can be all-consuming at times but once you get into a rhythm and build your confidence, it can feel empowering to engage with your audience and add value to the digital space. There's only one of you, so embrace what you have to offer!
And if in doubt, a cat video never let anyone down... GO GET 'EM TIGER!
